This one has been a long time coming.by Ken Perlman was the seventh guitar instruction book that I worked through. I had finished two general books in guitar instruction, and four fingerstyle books. If you’ve been tracking this blog at all, you know that I’m trying to build a good base in fingerstyle guitar.According to the reviews I read, this book is a classic instruction book originally published in 1980 (1980 is now “classic”?! What the hell.)I worked through this one sequentially, page by page.
Every day that I practiced, I worked the current pages’ song. When I felt like I had a handle on it, I moved on to the next. According to my practice log, this book took me 9 months and 14 days to complete (10-3-14 to 7-17-15).
And while I did work on (and finish) another book during this time, this book was a haul.Cut to the chase it was worth it I have no reservations about recommending this book to an advanced beginner in fingerstyle. And I say advanced beginner. The book doesn’t really go over hand positioning, or explain step by step the process of alternate base picking. No I think the undisputed winner of introduction to fingerpicking books (at least, among the few I’ve gone through) is the Art of Contemporary Travis Picking (reviewed.)And while the introductory songs start out fairly simple, they ramp up in complexity quickly, such that, by the end of the book, the piano rags you are playing are geared for a very capable intermediate fingerpicker. And what a lot of songs there are. One of the reasons this book took me so long is that there is something along the lines of 40 songs to learn in all different styles blues, folk, celtic.
Each song highlights a genre or style that Perlman is focusing you on, and each piece comes with liner notes on how to play the tricky bits.I recommend this book, and if you follow this blog, you are going to hear me stumble through quite a number of these songs. That being said, I’m looking forward to a new instruction book or two. Maybe a songbook, for a change.Cheers!
